COMMODORES

Formed in 1961 by students attending General Douglas MacArthur HS, Levittown NY.

This blog is an attempt to bring the members of the Commodores back together via a virtual reunion. A volunteer(s) is needed to organize a real reunion. Blogger: John McCormick, johnmc03301@yahoo.com

The First Annual Reunion of the Commodores September 13, 2008

Six Commodores attended. Two - Jeff and Don - who had not been at the mini-reunion in January and one - Eli who had attended the January event but could not make it this time - flying to Denmark to pick up puppies.

Quoting Jeff, "our reunion was a blast.... a hell of a good party(great food, drink and company)"

Great Conversations

As Terry commented, even though it has been 45 years since we have gotten together, it seemed like it was just yesterday that we had all left high school. Our mannerisms and patterns of speech had not changed. We never lacked for conversation and there were no awkward moments. We talked about the past, the present and future - Leventhal, Harding, Dave V's liquor business, Dave P's pawnshop, Jeff's rent to buy, Cherrywood Lounge and Torrinos, Ed Schmidt and Lee Zolet, Terry's teaching at Aldephi and coaching, Don's buying memorabilia at yard sales and selling on Ebay starting at $9.99, our health and our pills, illegal aliens, the presidential election (Dave V took a poll on who we thought was going to win - not who we wanted to win- McCain 4 Obama 2), betting on football games, and on and on. Absent contact for 45 years, we were still great friends. As one of the boys wrote in my high school yearbook, "COMMODORES FOREVER."

Great Food

The food was great. Don's secret to great hamburgers is to buy fresh meat - in late afternoon, after starting the grills, he and Kathy went to purchase the hamburger. We all had at least two burgers. Dave P was particularly impressed with the fresh tomatoes and Dave V out did himself by having 4 ears of fresh Long Island corn.

At Days End - USC vs Ohio State (Dave V.'s Pretender)

At the end of the day we watched the USC - Ohio State game on a fuzzy screen, using rabbit ears which pulled in an ABC station from Hartford CT. However, we were not just watching a football game, a bet was at stake here. Daves V and P have continued the high school tradition of gambling which often began with the refrain "How much do you wanna bet" They had placed a bet on a three game teaser (Instead of betting on one individual game, they were betting on the results of three games and given more points than you would get just betting one game. But, you had to win all three games, lose one of the three and you lose). They had won the first game, and had bet that USC would beat Ohio State (a pretender to be a top BCS team according to Dave V).

They went to sleep happy as USC overwhelmed Ohio State. They woke up worrying if in their third game, the Giants would be victorious, beating the point spread. This time they ended up winning their three game teaser - How much do you wanna bet that they did not continue their winning streak the following weekends.

The following morning we took the Dieners out for the "Hungry Man's Breakfast" a a local bagel deli. Then we departed, going our separate ways - Dave V to Kansas, Dave P to Wantagh, Terry to Levittown, and John to Scranton PA. Jeff was not able to stay the night but returned to his son's home on the Island to help Shelly babysit two grandchildren. Kathy Diener was to fly back to Florida the following day to meet her sister, and Don was to follow in several weeks.

It was agreed that we should make this an annual event and the second annual Commodore's reunion may be held in Manhattan, at Dave Vs condo on the east side. The goal of the second reunion is to have at least one Commodore who did not make this reunion to attend the one in 2009 - Glenn, Peter, Phil, Nick, Eli, Ace????

Kudos to Don and Kathy Diener

Thanks to Don and Kathy for hosting the first annual Commodores Reunion, providing great food, good accomodations, a place for conversation and above all, wonderful hospitality. They met all our needs including Third Base Is My Home when nature called.

Glenn and Don

Glenn was in Florida in May to celebrate his Mother's and Aunt's (they are twins) 85th birthday. While there, he had a chance to see Don, his next door neighbor during the Commodore years.

Don Diener

Hello mates, its been awhile and I really missed all my Commodore buddies from good ole Levittown and Wantagh. Thanks to John we have all reunited. Four years in the merchant marine and 30 years as a U.S. federal agent and now retired. I have 4 wonderful children, one girl and three boys. The pictures show my youngest son Kyle, wife Kathy, and cat Sundae. Two sons are lawyers, Lindsay is a high school math teacher, and Kyle is a junior at UCF. All 4 take after their mother, intelligent and good looking. I'm looking foward to seeing you all this summer at a reunion in the Hamptons. As for my black eye, if Ken Westfall was with me I would have escaped unscathed. Thanks to you all for all the good memories, lets make some more. -Don

The Commodore's Jacket

Faculty and students alike would turn to the side and make room when a Commodore wearing the jacket walked the halls of MacArthur High.

As I recall, many of us took the bus to Hampstead where we ordered the jacket. I believe "The Shabe" took the lead in the design and it cost between $20 and $25, real money at the time.

Kudos to Dave Vittor for keeping it all these years and sharing it with us.

Does anyone else have the jacket?

I also recall we had purchased dark blue collared quarter-zip sweatshirts with a large Old English C on the front. They were quite the item at Jones Beach. It is very doubtful that anyone still has one of these, but if you do, please share it with us.

Commodores Reunion 1/22/2008

In the photo above, from left to right, John McCormick, Eli(formerly Eric)Shaber, Dave Peppis, Terry Grace, and Dave Vittor met at Carmines near Time Square in the City. The reunion was arranged by Daves Vittor and Peppis.

The big surprise was Eli (formerly Eric). We knew what four of us looked like because we all had an entry on this blog with a photo. All our faces were pleasantly filled out from our high school days but this was not the case with Eli (remember Eli was Eric). He was a little cherub in high school - check his photo on the right side of the screen - but he is now much leaner. See his photo above. In fact, the consensus was that, if we passed Eli on the street, we would not have recognized him. One of Eli’s first statements was that he has been experiencing long term memory loss. However, in our two hour meeting, he was able to remember and contribute to our days at MacArthur.

Salad, chicken parm, pasta and shrimp were served but the food was secondary to the conversation.

Conversation about the past (it has been 45 years since we graduated from high school) is always interesting because each of us, from are individual perspectives, remember people and events differently.

Names from the past came up. I did not take notes, but some of the names, in not any particular order, were Jeff Loeb, Shelly(Hochstadt)Loeb, Ray Leitner, Willie Leitner, Nick Heinrich, Phil Kaminisky,Don Diener, Peter Greene, Glen Gray, Ken Harding, Ed Schmidt, Bob Lapolla (the Belly), Bob Leaventhal, Ace Presson, Andrew Rosenblatt, Marcia Bloom, Johnny Sierra, Kenny Westfall, Jan (Westfall)Grace, James Perkins, Pete Capparell, Al Weiler, Peter Wanderman, Sue Rea, Bob Junsch and others.

The high school years did not dominate the discussion. Questions were asked: What we would have done different? How are your children? What do you now enjoy doing? How come we are not considered Baby Boomers? Health? Whose taking Lipitor? The stock market? Parents? Travel?

Both Terry's and Dave Peppis's parents are still living (fathers are 89). What is really remarkable is that the Dave Peppis's parents have never moved and are living in the same house where in the basement we hung out, played ping pong, and held Commodore parties. Both of Dave Vittor’s parents have passed away. Eli’s mother and John’s mother (just turned 95) are still living.

We all did some traveling but Eli, who has been retired for about six years has taken travel to the extreme, e.g. trips to Antarctica, Tibet, and a trip is planned in December 2008 to Uganda to check out the gorillas.

It was quite the thrill to see each other after all these years.

What is next?

Don Diener, who has just been recently located alive and well in Florida, has a place in the Hamptons, purchased back in the seventies. He has suggested that we all meet there sometime this summer.
